Heartworm Disease in New Mexico

Although mosquitoes are not a huge problem in the Eldorado area, we do see them. If  you travel or hike with your dog, the risk of infection is increased.

Prevention is safe and easy. We typically carry and recommend Heartgard Plus (ivermectin and pyrantel). Heartguard Plus comes in a chewable cube and guards against heartworms, hookworms, and roundworms. If your dog tests negative for heartworm, and will not travel to states where heartworm is prevalent, we recommend starting your dog on Heartguard in May and continuing through the end of October. We carry Heartguard in our pharmacy, and also provide it through our online store at prices that meet or beat 1-800-pet-meds.

At Eldorado Animal Clinic, we recommend a heartworm test every other year.  If you have not been in yet this season for your heartworm test or preventative, please call or e-mail the clinic
